How to travel abroad in your own or someone else's car – what you need to know.

To travel abroad in your own or someone else's car, you need to have a specific list of mandatory documents, which will be checked by both our border guards and foreign authorities. The absence of any of these documents may be a reason for refusal to cross the border.

To cross the border in your own car, you need to have:

  • Driver's license.
  • Vehicle registration certificate issued in the name of the driver or passenger.
  • International insurance ("Green Card").

Additionally, the car must have a license plate containing Latin letters (an individual license plate is valid only within the territory of Ukraine).

A driver who is not the owner of the car must have the same set of documents as the owners. In such a case, the vehicle registration certificate for traveling abroad is issued in the name of the driver or passenger.

To do this, it is necessary to visit the MVS service center together with the car owner and obtain the vehicle registration certificate for traveling abroad. You need to bring:

  • Passport.
  • Registration number of the taxpayer identification card.
  • Vehicle registration certificate.

After returning from abroad, the vehicle registration certificate in the name of the driver must be returned to the MVS service center within 10 days.

A power of attorney to drive someone else's car abroad will be valid under several conditions:

  • The document needs to be translated into the language of the country where you will be staying.
  • Legalize the document in the established procedure, completing the necessary procedures for recognizing a document issued in another country – apostille or legalization.
